    I like that I can take the time to gather my thoughts, compose my answers and edit them afterwards - so I don't sound like a incoherent idiot like I do IRL. Perhaps, I'm a little more open here than IRL because real life doesn't often afford appropriate settings to talk about the sorts of things we discuss here. Besides, even though it might not seem like it sometimes, I usually avoid writing about anything that's too emotionally raw. I have very clear personal boundaries for myself and don't have a problem distinguishing between deeper aspects of my personality that can be shared and private emotions that should be kept to myself.

    I've dreamt in my life dreams that have stayed with me ever after, and changed my ideas;
    they've gone through and through me, like wine through water, and altered the colour of my mind.

    Pretty much this. Whereas I can identify with the sentiments expressed in the OP, the biggest difference is that online communities are pretty much more impersonal in nature in compared to their real-life counterparts, and you're able to fully dictate the nature of your interactions. Here, you're only known by an alias; you're faceless, nameless, and your only unique identity exist only in soulless avatar of your choosing. When you turn the computer off, we all cease to exist.

    While this is also possible to a certain extent in person, online you can create and manipulate your entire perception of who you actually are or who you want others to believe you am. Less accountability = Less inhibition.

    Online, I can read other peoples' posts and think about what I want to say and how I want to say it before replying. I often find that real life conversations go too fast. By the time I'm ready to reply, they're onto something else.

    There's a sense of anonymity online that there isn't in real life. In some ways that makes it easier to reveal certain things about myself.

    I have a sense of choice with online forums that I don't always have in real life conversations with people. With forums its easier to pick and choose topics of interest. I read the threads that interest me and ignore the ones that don't. In real life it would be impolite to just back out in the middle of a conversation but with online forums and check in and check out just as I please.

    The realization that I'm not alone in the way I understand and react to the world. This community is awesome. All who help the people searching for answers are to be commended.
