I heard that a troll is an ugly cave-dwelling Scandinavian beast.

Authoritarians have trouble defining a troll, for authoritarians are unable to distinguish between chaos and creativity.

So a troll leaves chaos while a creative leaves a new idea.

But the authoritarian can't tell the difference between chaos and a new idea and so labels the chaotic and the creative as trolls.

    Good discussion.

Flamer: can cause disruption and argument, use provacative statements, flaming remarks, because they genuinely disagree with the topic at hand.

Or atleast thats the way I see it....

Ones perception of anothers remarks and beliefs.
If you get enough people saying ones a troll, then there a troll.
Doesn't matter if they really are or not.
That's not far off the mark.

Some people have a bad habit of not having the ability to back up a claim with anything of substance. When they are called out on it, to save face, they accuse the other person of trolling. It's a common tactic around here - cheap as it is.

yes. some even speculate they are remnant caracatures of the Cro Magnons's first run-ins with Neanderthals (modern day Finns are said to be the closest living relatives of the Cro Magnon population that first entered europe, so this makes sense)

There is an idea that a troll might just be someone who doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about, stumbles in with an absurd opinion, and when it is ripped apart have too much mental hubris to realize they are wrong and defend it to the bitter end or even pretend they never really held that position to begin with, that they were only getting a rise out of the unsophisticated commoners. They might even make themselves believe that is what they were doing all along on some level, but really they are probably just too arrogant to concede that they have faults or areas they lack expertise in like anyone else. I don't know how overall accurate this is, but I would imagine it is accurate for some, if not many, trolls.

And, after all, there is a fairly prominent psychological idea that supports this as a reasonable thesis. Look up Dunning-Kruger effect if you aren't already familiar.

Other than that, they're probably still assholes with a superiority complex, they're just a little more self-aware in terms of the fact they know they are spewing bullshit.

    Trollers want attention.

The worst mistake people make in political arguments is assuming that the other side is not trying to do the right thing. This simple oversight makes productive conversation nearly impossible.
