Default The World's Greatest Tax Thread!

Well not really but I hope I got your attention!

With the tax deadline looming for Americans, I thought I'd ask the following questions:

    1) Have you filed your taxes yet this year or will you wait till the very last minute?

I may be an atypical P, but I did mine a few weeks ago. I don't like the last minute pressure and I wanted to get my refund sooner.

    2) Do you have to file income taxes for your state?

    Yes, I live in Minnesota

    3) Are you getting a refund this year or do you owe money? If you don't mind answering, how much?

    $800 refund.

    4) If you are getting a refund, do you plan on spending it or saving it?

Spend about half; save about half.

    5) How long does it typically take you to do your taxes?

    1-2 hours

    6) Did you file your taxes yourself or are you getting help from either a friend, family member, or professional?

I did it myself but I did have my father check over my forms to see that there were no errors.

    7) If you are from outside of the USA, what is filing for taxes like over there?

    N/A

    8) What's the funniest thing you've encountered when filing for taxes?

Nothing yet. Did I miss something?

Already filed them last month. Usually I do it around Feb/March timeframe. My birthday is Tax day. I never ever wait until tax day. I need that money for my birthday!!

    2) Do you have to file income taxes for your state?
    Nope. :3 Thank goodness.

    3) Are you getting a refund this year or do you owe money? If you don't mind answering, how much?
I got a refund, a little more than 500$, which isn't bad considering I didn't do a lot of work and owed taxes on my contracting job.

    4) If you are getting a refund, do you plan on spending it or saving it?
It's waaay already spent for sure. Usually though, I use it to pay off major purchases of one sort or another.

    5) How long does it typically take you to do your taxes?
It took me an afternoon.. from about 2-3pm until 8pm, when I got frustrated and made my dad look it over for me.

    6) Did you file your taxes yourself or are you getting help from either a friend, family member, or professional?
I use Turbotax, and my father helps me look it over once before I submit.

    7) If you are from outside of the USA, what is filing for taxes like over there?
    Totally in Texas, so N/A!

    8) What's the funniest thing you've encountered when filing for taxes?
Nothing is ever funny about taxes :c

I live in Canada and it's...pretty much the same I guess. Mine were done about a month ago, and my refund should be coming soon.

I don't do them myself; I know a nice ESFJ who does mine for me for free every year. I did it myself one year just to make sure I could do it if I ever needed to.

Yes, I'm getting a refund. I don't have any particular plans to spend it, but I'm going to just give myself permission to be less cautious about money for awhile.

i did my taxes a month and a half ago. if anything can keep a P from procrastinating it's a nice, big check
i got ~$1500, but it's long gone. i used it to pay rent and food. no fun.
and i just did it on taxact.com, it probably took about 20 minutes. i didn't have any deducations or anything complicated to do.

    1) Have you filed your taxes yet this year or will you wait till the very last minute?
Usually we file as soon as we get our W-2s, but this year we only got it done mid-March because we were waiting for the new rules to be put into place.

    2) Do you have to file income taxes for your state?
    Yes, I live in Minnesota.

    3) Are you getting a refund this year or do you owe money? If you don't mind answering, how much?
Married-filing-jointly, got a refund of almost $3000. A lot of that was because we made some energy-efficient improvements to our home.

    4) If you are getting a refund, do you plan on spending it or saving it?
Saving, mostly. Might spend a little for our road trip later this year, but I'm hoping to just cover that out of pocket. It shouldn't cost too much.

    5) How long does it typically take you to do your taxes?
    It probably took 2 hours.

    6) Did you file your taxes yourself or are you getting help from either a friend, family member, or professional?
My dad buys the Turbo Tax software every year, and I do our taxes using that software. (With a little help from my spouse, but I mostly do it. )

    7) If you are from outside of the USA, what is filing for taxes like over there?
    N/A

    8) What's the funniest thing you've encountered when filing for taxes?
Last year my spouse had this really weird statement from the IRS, something about an overpayment refund (??) of about $100, that we were supposed to put under Other Income. Well, you know the list of codes that they give you for types of Other Income? The code listed on the form he received-- FROM THE IRS-- had a code that wasn't on the list of options provided by the IRS. WTF!!
Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

-Filed them 2 weeks ago. Usually file them a month ahead of time.
    - Technically, no one is required to file tax forms, not even federal income tax forms, but you do have to pay your taxes every year* anyways, yes, I file in california
    - I am getting a refund of ~$1500 this year. All of it will be spent on paying off something..
    - I use Turbotax and it takes me about 30 mins to do my taxes. My info just gets imported from last years taxes because I use the same program every year.
    - I used to use a professional but now I like to do it myself and I take it to a place like H&R Block to look them over for free. They will do that! The local IRS office
will also do your taxes for you or look them over for free as well.
    - Taxes aren't ever fun or funny.

    Too many questions.

I always wait until the last minute to do my taxes. They'll get sent on Friday.
Get rid of the IRS and then I'll have a funny story to tell.
