Default Do you keep weapons handy when you sleep?

This came up once in Halla's blog. I have been surprised even when living in very safe communities to discover that most of my male friends keep things like machetes and baseball bats within arm's reach while they sleep.

I know in the States, many people also have guns closeby for protection.

What about you? Do you keep weapons handy? If so, what is it and do you have and what made you decide it was important? Are you ever afraid that it could be used against you instead?

Screwdriver hidden in the mattress. That is about all I need.

I don't, and I've thought about this before. Many of my friends elsewhere owned firearms, and some had concealed weapons permits. I kinda understood having a pistol under the pillow [no one will take it while your sleeping on top of it], but things like "rifle in the coat closet" really made me wonder.

Most parents I know who own firearms have them safely locked up in gun cabinets, no accidentally getting into those.

The only dedicated weapons I have in my place are training swords, and they aren't live blades [ie where the blade would be on a "real" sword is flat on mine], but it does have a point on the end. I do have swiss army knives, a gerber blade, and various screwdrivers. If someone wants to attack me with my swords they can try, but unless they have particular training there they;ll probably use it a lot like a baseball bat, and we spent a LOT of time learning how to counter those kinda of attacks.

Even if I wanted to own firearms, which I don't, I'd refuse to leave them out where someone can grab them. If someone is going to come into my residence and attack me with a weapon, they will have to bring it with them.

    That's how I feel.

No, but I do keep a charged cell phone handy (along with a phone connected to a landline if possible) when I sleep. That's about the closest thing to a weapon you'll see me planning on using.

I think keeping weapons by the bed seems like creepy, paranoid behavior.

I used to have a wooden sword/bokken around. Believe me, they can hurt. I don't know where it went though. I have a lot of knives in the kitchen, so I end up going to those in the (rare) times that I thought something bad was happening. I've never kept firearms for very long. A hunting rifle once. I would keep one if I really thought I needed it, but the idea doesn't appeal to me.

No, but I've thought of it. I've got a thick bamboo flute by my bed.. ex samuri used to use them as cudgels, that could work in a pinch.

I have a 15 lb., 3.5 ft. long exercise bar. I stopped using it to exercise, but instead of giving it away or throwing it out, decided to keep it under my bed for that purpose.

    No..
I do not keep any weapons of any kind anywhere.
I rarely feel physically under threat.
And just about anything can become a weapon if need be.
I don't make life and death enemies and I am an unlikely victim of robbery.
If someone is stealing from me.. they must be pretty bad off.
