OMG, do you guys all live in high crime rate ghettos? I understand that the thought about a possible burglary might enter ones head at some point, but I don't know anybody personally who has as much as a baseball bat ready. The pure thought of it just seems strange. Then again, I don't know anybody who ever got burgled or physocally attacked by a criminal either.

Edit: Correct that, 15 years ago a friend of a friend got beaten up by neonazis on the streets of Rostock and 10 years ago another friend was robbed on the streets of Barcelona (didn't get hurt though). But I never heard of any burlary or attack in anybody's home ever in 30 years.

Yes. I'm in a very shady suburb of Washington D.C.

For awhile I lived in an apartment building a few blocks away. There were no guards, and the locks on the outside doors were busted so that if you yanked hard enough you didn't even need to enter the 4-digit pin number to get in.

There were 16 robberies during the 1st semester I lived there. Fortunately, most of them were on the 1st floor. I was on the 3rd.

The apartment complex with the locks and guards was about 100$ more per month to live there. My parents agreed to pay the difference between the apartments if I agreed to move somewhere safer.

5 months after I moved out, there was a murder in my old apartment complex over drugs.

Almost everyone I know has been robbed at one point in their lives. Where do you live?

It's good old American paranoia. I don't know anybody who has been in a fight that they didn't start in a bar or venue of some sort. I did martial arts for a couple years, self defense oriented. Envisioning attack scenarios at all times is basically part of the course.

Heidelberg, Germany. Nice quite university town, good living standard, low crime rate.
But I was also referring to friends and family from other places.

Muahuahua. You forgot the part where they conspire in beer cellars to take over the world (you just wait!)

The actually are at least two fraternities, but I don't think they fence anymore. It's more about binge drinking while a student and networking when you have a decent job. I have a very low opinion of them. However, two friends are connected to one that is mostly an association of young artists and organizes concerts and open mic nights and such.

My grandfather joined a fencing fraternity back when he studied law in Munich in the late twenties and he did have the infamous scar. He joined because he was a country boy, grew up on a farm, and was new in town and considered it the best way to meet people. At least that's the official history, he died when I was 2.
