Perhaps the way you discuss it. By "current events", I do not mean a recitation of the trivial tidbits from the evening news. I mean, for example, an assessment of the current unrest in Egypt, with some consideration of the historical events and international influences that shaped the existing government, and some well-reasoned speculation on how the situation will unfold, with implications for the neighboring nations and the world community. If you consider that to be small talk, perhaps we need to review and standardize definitions.

    Me too.

Well, I should qualify that. Mainly, I don't like talking to people I don't know, for long periods of time. I don't mind a few minutes of small talk with a stranger at the bus stop, but if that stranger sits next to me when we get on the bus and wants to continue that conversation.... ugh. Bad news.

I don't mind small or big talk with people I know well, provided I'm in the right mood.

If I'm not in the right mood, I don't like any kind of talk with anyone.
Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

Depends on the subject of the small talk, eh? I'm never gonna launch into a conversation about who won the cricket, or the footy. Master chief is/was good fodder for small talk (T.V. programme), who doesn't like talking about food? The weather is safe ground. House prices and renovations are good topics (I am in my thirties, though, it's of interest to me). How crappy public transport is good too, when in the city. Not so great with local gossip.
Currently submerged under an avalanche of books and paper work. I may come back up for air from time to time.
