    Default huh?!

They just took my desks. They took all the desks from my classroom. My classroom is empty except for my own desk and one small table. My desks will not be returned for at least a week.

I did not know about this in advance. I got a note from the custodian telling me to have my students take the desks to the auditorium. I did as I was told. I have now just been informed that they will be used all next week during standardized testing.

So my other students? The ones who are not testing? Where will they sit? The custodian said she didn't know; the principal hadn't said. I suppose they'll sit on the cold linoleum floor for the next week.

    I'm flabbergasted.

If you could overnight some floor pillows and/or carpet squares, I'd be much obliged.

No desks... are there alternatives? Surely there's larger tables and chair you can nab something around the school? If not, lessons on the ground (so long as it doesn't require individual students writing too much) is doable. Get like a floor rug or something so they don't have to sit directly on the floor. Send them off in small groups to research on a topic to present to the class?

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade I suppose.

Not that I've found... the other teachers who lost desks may have been quicker than I.

And where will I get this rug? Who will purchase it? What will I do with it when the desks return?

    More like it.

Today I brought four floor cushions, but there aren't enough students in my first class right now to form a quorum so we can't officially do business.

The room sounds like it's been set up perfectly for theatrical warm-ups or mind-body exercises or trust building games or meditation or anything else so out there, metaphysical, and or cheesy that your students will totally believe you did this on purpose.

Plus, you'll TOTALLY get rep as an alternative "out of the box" teacher.

You could have the more dominant students subdue the weaker ones and sit on them.
