You are in your early 20s IIRC so it could just be that you think the decades you weren't alive during had stronger flavors than they had.

    Wikipedia says:

The 2000s are often described as a "mash-up" decade.[1] For the most part, the decade did not have one particular style like the decades from the '40s to '80s, but rather a recycling of styles from past decades, which was common in 1990s fashion.

I may be 'too young' to comment on this, as I've only lived through two decades, but I think that a lot more problems arose in the 2000s and there wasn't really any straight answers as to how to solve them, unlike the 40s where their problem was mostly a war, but they had enough propaganda around to put people's spirits up and boost their confidence in the war. Maybe people got too excited about high-speed internet and stuff.

    What Beefeater said.

I am afraid, though, we'll look back on the 2000-2010s and only be able to remember skinny jeans, Bieber hair, Jersey Shore, the Kardashians and lame vampires. I hope that we will look back and laugh at how stupid we were for creating so many annoying mashup words like "jeggings."

I think it's cute when kids make generalizations like this.

People have said the same thing about past generations. The 80s in particular has a reputation of being emo and moody.

I think the biggest trend in the last decade has been the (slow) decline of mass media dictating culture. The trend has been towards further individualisation, due to the large amount of choices offered.

Globalization. You're taking it for granted. Those decades only seem neatly packaged because they are so far past.

What about blogging and facebook and all of the things we accept as every day life? Will these aspects of Internet culture go unchanged? People going organic? Travel seemingly becoming easier and more frequent? These are all manifestations of 2000-2010, I could probably come up with more.

Here's how I kind of view it:
    2000-2009:
Flare jeans, monogrammed paraphernalia, silver jewelry, Italian charm bracelets, IM, cooler toned music (especially in keyboard sounds), Homeland Security, terrorism fears, economy tanks in the second half of the decade, introduction of flat screen TVs and computer monitors, mp3s, iTunes, iPod, mp3 players, CD-RW and CD-R, DVDs, Blue-Ray, indie rock, reunion/comeback tours, gas prices go up, recession, the McMansion, decline of the housing market, No Child Left Behind, stem cell research, cloning, The Iraq/ Afghanistan/ Iranian wars.

    Current decade:
Music with autotune vocals, brown is the new black, pink or light blue mixed with brown motifs in fashion and decor, analog sounding keyboard sounds come back, vintage style photography, skinny jeans, retro fashions, bohemian styles, Facebook, iPad, e-readers, 3-D television and movies, looking for change, recession, gas prices too high, housing market low, Tea Party, genetic medicine, going green, owl motifs, downsizing...

That already came out in 2008, it remains unfinished.

The funniest part about that is that I'm telling the truth.
