    This is a great thing about English... it's very dynamic. But supposedly it's one of the hardest languages to learn, because of the irregularities, esp. in spelling. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that it is a Germanic language but strongly influenced by Romance languages...

    One of the most annoying English words to me is "buses." The plural of bus, as in a school bus. That spells "byoozes!" Like "abuses"! I see no reason why it shouldn't be spelled "busses," unless it is meant to distinguish it from the 3rd person form of the very "to bus," as in to bus tables. But that seems like a dumb reason to me. (I remember my 5th grade English teacher made me re-do an assignment over and over again because I kept writing about "school busses." Yeah, I'm still bitter. )
    Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

    Luggage= LUGG-edge, but Garage= ger-AZH (although in the UK I believe they say GARE-edge)

    From what I remember from days of yore, English is composed of approximately 75% Latin, 15% Greek, and the rest is from various others.

    But they Ar-Kansas. Or are they saying that Kansas is not Kansas and they're the only Kansas that's viewable in the past tense?

    It was originally pronounced our-kansas. But, then Kansas came along and the people of arkansas didn't care much for the people of kansas particularly their inability to saw wood very well. In fact the people of arkansas would often yell out "ours can saw" when they met someone from kansas. The kansas folks were a bit hard of hearing and thought that they were simply yelling out the name of their state... "ar-can-saw". This pronunciation became very popular particularly in arkansas where they were happy to be rid of a pronunciation similar to that of kansas and claim their ability to saw effectively... two birds with one stone.
