My first impression was that the man is standing in the foreground, and an explosion is going off in the background. He seems to be holding on to a railing...perhaps outside on a balcony, and since it doesn't look like he is looking at the fire, he just seems cold, as if he doesn't care at all...perhaps he was the initiator of the fire/explosion?
The light/flames are coming out from the man. Not going into or attacking him. Otherwise the force would push his head back further than his shoulders, but rather it is coming out and pulling his head forward.
Nor is his head in the foreground, unless he has a chunk of his face taken out where his eye/bridge of the nose would be. It's the light/fire erupting from his eye socket. And the brightest spots are right outside of the eyes and mouth before dissipating into the surrounding air.
Reminds me of cyclops, only with the lasers coming from his mouth too.
Good use of contrasting warm/cool color scheme.

Anyways, it's the cover art to the metal band "ZAO" that's still around (but has no original members). They started in 1993 and are a Christian band (although the lyrics of their last several albums don't really focus on their faith). A very intense band and one that shocked the Christian music scene at their origination.
the fire is the mens wife who was once a hot women. She was so hot and sexy that she turned to fire, the man who doesn't look bad him self but obviously not as hot as is wife feels ugly after finding out that his wife was sexy enough to turn into fire. So now his wife is kissing him to show even though he didn't turn into fire with her he still loves her.
