Default I am not being taxed...

    Hi there,

So I have noticed that the UK tax office is NOT taxing me, I don't understand why not. I have been working for a company (on a training basis) and I was for the past 3 months being paid £5.60 an hour and I was doing 30 hours a week. Last week I completed my training and I am now being paid £17.34 an hour and I am doing 59 hours a week. This week I grossed £1023 and I was deduced £13 for national insurance but there was no tax deductions.

In total for this year 2010 I have made about 3.5K since I only started working like 4 months ago (I was unemployed up until then) I spoke to my manger at work, and he told me that I was not being taxed because, I will be taxed next year 2011 or if I earn more then 5K in 2010. I've tried to contact Inland Revenue, but I get put on hold I would appropriate if someone has any ideas of what is going on. My tax code and national insurance number are all in order.

Seems quite odd that I am not being taxed.

You're not being spared from taxes, they're just not being withheld. Put aside 20% or so of your paycheck anyway, in case tax collectors come looking for their money.

EDIT I am not familiar with the UK tax code, so you could actually be spared for some bizarre reason (can't think of why that'd be), but in any case saving money is still a good practice.

I have saved most of the money I have made.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that income level in the US is, for a single person, solidly in the upper-middle-class range. At the current exchange rate, your pay corresponds to a gross income of over $82,000 per year US.

Put away more than 20 percent. I'd save back at least double that for when the tax man comes calling.
