I like the sound of rain and faint thunder. The wind in the trees. The birds and the bees and the narrow mountain streams.

I don't generally like the sound humans make.

    Great idea for a thread.

I've got to say that my auditory functions are pretty important to me, I'd much rather lose my sense of smell or sensation than hearing and its second only to my eyesight since I'm a big reader. It's also a big part of sensual/physical intimacy to me and without it I might very well give up on that side of life altogether, dont know how to describe that as s sound though

    OK, other things.

    - Drone of lawn mower.
    - Rain fall, particularly against a window.
    - Thunder.
    - Rain and wind, particularly if I'm inside and warm/protected from it.
    - Highway traffic.
    - Wailing Guitars.
    - Ecustic classical guitar.
    - Harp.
    - Irish pipes or Scottish bag pipes.
    - Many of the traditional japanese instruments such as flute and kyoto harp.
    - The loading screen music for Commodore 64 games, I think its called Ocean2 but I cant be sure, there are a few I remember though. Also some of the tunes associated with particular games, ie Last Ninja, Shadow of the Beast.
    - My dog Monty's excited welcome back whine.
    - The sound of the post coming in the letter box.
    - Laughter, particularly the uncontrolled laughter of babies, they have no concept of humour and therefore laugh purely because it feels good to do so, also the amused or excited burblings they make when they are trying to communicate their happiness or contentedness.
    - When I was younger my dad used to sing, usually trade union songs or traditional irish songs, he doesnt do it so much anymore and when I was younger, like a little kid, I used to complain about it. Now and again I'll have a dream and hear it, usually if I'm travelling or gone from home for a longer time.
    - The old time radio broadcasts which I download for my iPod sometimes have the sound of the needle from the record in the groove, others have some pretty hammy content or sound effects, they all kind of cheer me up.
    - The shipping report on the radio. Also the tune that plays before the shipping report.
    - Trains on track. Either as a passenger or in the vacinity.

Fantastic idea. I'm a sound junkie!

Musical: pan flute, shehnai, acoustic and spanish guitar, harp, jinghu, guqin, erhu and zhonghu, dizi, pipa, palmas (flamenco clapping), violin, cello, piccolo, piano, harpsichord, harmonica, trumpet, keyboard, electronic, ambient, synthesizer

Natural: wind chimes, thunder, rain, wind, waterfalls, ocean waves, cockatiel singing, crickets, fire crackling

Misc: doorbell, town center clock, school bell, trains, airplanes, helicopters, PA system, ambulance wail, fireworks, rollercoasters, carnival music, car horn, whatever sound cars make when they go by, air conditioner, cycling, school bands, bread popping out of the toaster, food cooking, teapot screaming, puddle splashing, arcade games

Human: speech, laughter, song, humming, clicking heels, children playing, cheering, screaming (in enjoyment)

    and etc.

    Nice.

Also, we need Monty pictures in the Dog Lovers group!
Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

Sorry to keep posting, but if you're reading this thread, you may enjoy this free radio program about the relationship between language and music. Thanks to Lexicon for pointing this out to me.

    red hot chili peppers.
Is it that by its indefiniteness it shadows forth the heartless voids and immensities of the universe, and thus stabs us from behind with the thought of annihilation, when beholding the white depths of the milky way?

    • Storms of any kind. The more dramatic, the better. Add in a charged atmosphere to sights and sounds and Wow!
    • Kittens. Their mews and also, the other soft little sounds like the padding of their tiny paws.
    • Rivers, streams and oceans.
    • Gentle, hot summer breezes as they tickle through brush, leaves and grass.
    • Finch song on a lazy spring morning.
