    Absolutely nothing.
It's a series that provides the illusion of character development and plot, when there is actually nothing. The majority of the plot of the four books could have been written in one. It still wouldn't give you a complex look at the characters and the plot would still be pretty uneventful/bland.
The movies are terrible because of the plot and casting. The bland events of the books focus around love. Instead, they all look like they are taking a dump in the middle of a crowded auditorium when trying to express it. It's awkward and uncomfortable.

    Why is it popular?
Hopeless girls, who are typically awkward and unfortunate, take comfort in the idea of both a vampire and a werewolf obsessing over a baseless female protagonist that they can relate to.
    That's really all it is.

Even Vampire Diaries has more twists in 15 minutes, and that's a shoddy cable tv channel .
    True Blood is fantastic though.

    In a sort of...
"I wanted to eat you" / "I vampire-snuck into your room to watch you while you sleep" kinda way. Amongst many other ways.
The forth one's pseudo-romantic pedophilia coverup was super romantic.

Honestly i thing Robert Pattinson is pretty attractive. but I can look at pictures of him for free on the internet if i so desired so why would i pay to see a shitty movie? attractive actors =/= good movie.

I'm also not impressed by the portrayal of women in the parts of the book that I've read, especially since younger girls/women are a big target demographic for the series.

That and i'm more into zombies than vampires anyway

I don't find him particularly cute either, but he plays the character with an incredible amount of intensity and danger, while showing a great deal of vulnerability

That, in itself = in many women

Years ago I was on some site that was about making these sort of stupid tests, like "Which fantasy race would you belong to?", "What does your favorite colour say about you?" and things like that.
Over time, the site started to flood with stories, and they didn't even categorize them as stories and just left them in the wrong categories and everything. Then that became kind of the point of the site, which annoyed me at the time because I kind of liked the tests.
And the stories? These are the themes they had:
    a) Teenage girl gets involved with someone from a popular punk pop band (like Good Charlotte), or relationships between the band members
    b) Some girl's normal life at school, gets involved with some guy
    c) Some girl goes to a new school and gets a crush on some guy who she later finds out is a vampire or a fallen angel or a werewolf or something like that / A new guy comes to the main character's (girl) school, later it's found that he's a vampire. / Teenage girl gets kidnapped by a vampire/fallen angel/werewolf and some more similar characters and they all fall in love with the girl and she has to make a choice

    C) sounds a LOT like Twilight, doesn't it? I wonder if the author of the series was on that site

I was wondering this too, until i went on a facebook message board for twilight fans and saw comments like "OMG EDWARD I LOVE YOU!" and "I CANT PICK BETWEEN YOU TWO I LOE YOU BOTH EDWARD AND JAKE" by 12 year old girls... then I understood.
