I never made it a habit to say "bless you" when someone sneezes. But that's pretty much all it is---a reflex action to hearing a sneeze. Nothing to take offense at, even if you're not religious. You have to pick your battles sometimes, and calling out people for something as pointless as saying "bless you" just makes you sound stupid and hinders your efforts in other areas.

    Dane Cook...
    Ew...

I yell "Jesus fucking Christ! God dammit!" when I stub my toe, so it's not like I'm going to seriously complain when somebody says "bless you" after I sneeze.

You could say 'gesundheit' (means "to your health"; no belief in a deity required).

But yeah, I don't know anyone who takes 'god bless you' literally, or gets offended by it. Even in the encounter Dane Cook described, the 'god bless you' was really expressing annoyance and it sounded like the guy just wanted something dickish to snap back.

I always found it odd that with some involuntary body functions (burping, yawning, hiccuping), you're expected to excuse yourself, and with sneezing other people are supposed to do something polite for you.

I've heard it stems from this: while sneezing, your heart stops for a millisecond, so your soul is in "danger" of being taken over by demons. (haven't googled it yet, so don't hold me to it) Superstition. People used to kill their red-headed newborns because they thought the children were "of satan". So, that just goes to show not everything needs to be past down through history.
I don't say it, and yes I get annoyed when other people say "god bless you", but not "bless you". It's presumptive. I never say anything, except to people close to me. I give them crap, just to show that my opinion of thinking it is not necessary is just as valid as someone else's thought that it is necessary.
What is normal to one, is incomprehensible to another.

I either say "Bless You" or "Don't Die"
It's mostly out of habit, but i broke myself of saying "God Bless You" as it doesn't apply to me. I don't care if other people say it to me, but i don't like to completely feed into a religious statement in a positive fashion.

It reminds me of people getting offended if someone says Merry Christmas, instead of Happy Holidays. If you don't want to say it because it isn't your deal then fine, but don't take a dump on everyone else's parade because your panties got all bunched and skidmarked.

I regularly yell at people who say "God bless you" after I sneeze

    it's like.. I don't need a priest; I just need a damn tissue

the time you spend enunciating words would have been better spent grabbing kleenexes

hell, you probably got even more germs on me when you spat your words out at me, so you're worse than useless; you're compounding the problem

also: your precious God doesn't even exist anyway

    .. etc.

in any case, I now know more about Dane Cook's sneeze-related etiquette than I ever dreamed

    Seconded.

I'm an atheist. I don't care if someone says 'god bless you'. I don't care if people say anything at all. I don't respond when other people sneeze.

It means nothing to me, really. It's just one of many meaningless social interactions humans seem compled to go through,
