Heh -- I didn't mention Chicago only because it *does* have public transit -- to much more an extent than most American cities do. It's more suburban than NY or SF, but less so than most American cities these days.

no... they have the blues and barbecue while we have John Mellencamp and auto racing

in other words, they're a bit classier

    they also have more beer

and nobody wants to absorb Gary... it'd end up with Chicago expanding to the nice suburbs and leaving Gary and Hammond as an island within the city

    Chicago?

How can a city be representative if you have to be American to know what that city represents?

    St Augustine, Florida.

Why? It breaks just about every American city stereotype going. That's got to be a good thing if you want to redefine yourself to others!

New York is a really solid foundation for representing the USA, i don't know why you'd want another.

maybe NYC and Los Angeles, together.
together they are pretty forceful! together they say a lot.
although the differences maybe are only really spelled out and meaningful if you are an American....

It's gotta be Chicago, if you want a big city. San Francisco and Boston are too liberal, Dallas and Phoenix are too conservative, LA is just too weird. I guess I'd hear arguments from Philly, Seattle or Nashville.

Of course, we could always go with Peoria
