Default What's up with Hollywood and the name Jack?

It's becoming a bit of a joke at our house because it is driving me nuts.
Have you noticed that so many movies or TV series feature the character name Jack or a derivative
    i.e. Jackson, Jake.

    Just to name a few.....

    Jack the priest in 'V'
Jack the pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean
    Jack in '24'
Jack in the Tom Clancy film adaptations
    Jack in Lost

Feel free to add to this and push me over the edge.

Agent Brown: 'Perhaps we are asking the wrong questions.'

'Maybe the questions are right, we just don't like the answers'

Jack is a very common name, it's easy to pronounce and it sounds good.
I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower. The TV was obviously on. I used to fly myself and I said, "There's one terrible pilot."

And we have our very own Jack Flak.

And Jack will push you over the quotidian edge into myth.

But most of all we are creating our own myth of Jack Flak.

And this is profoundly resisted by those who believe all kinds of other myths.

And this is understandable because it takes a myth to kill another myth, just as the only response to a poem is another poem.

And just as our holy book tells us our God is a jealous God, so our Jack is a jealous Jack.

This is called, by Joseph Campbell, creative mythology and opens up a whole conversation between our Jack and the jealous Gods of our taken-for-granted mythology.

Fortunately this is the never-ending-conversation, both tolerant and well run. So we can look forward to a creative conversation on the mythical level.

    What more could we want?

I see we are both in the same time zone but other than that either you need some sleep or I do. I think it's me.

    It's not you.

I think Jack is common among TV and movie protagonists simply because it's a very masculine one-syllable name. Names give you a physical thumbnail sketch of a person without actually seeing them. It's important to remember that most of the time TV shows and movies are sold as scripts before actors are involved, so any bit of character that can be conveyed simply with a name is valuable. Picture a few guys in your mind. Their names are Phil, Bob, George and Jack. Now tell me which of those guys you picture is the most masculine and capable. There you go.

It is true, Jack is kind of a trendy name on tv these days. The names Chloe, Zoe and Lucy were really trendy for women in movies for a while there, even though they wouldn't have been popular names for girls in real life at the time the character would have been born. If that makes sense. It seems to me that character names tend to be as trendy as baby names are, and go in cycles.

The only Jack I can think of from tv growing up was on Three's Company. Now they're everywhere.

Let's not forget Jack Klompus! He's ridden in a Cadillac hundreds of times.

And the only way you can put me down is by homophobia.

You should be ashamed of yourself.
