    Default Alternative Formal Wear?

Alright. long story short, Im going to prom with my woman. its somewhat against my will but we are both pretty much in it just for the fancy clothes, and cause some of our friends invited us. anywho...
were going shopping on satruday for something to wear, and im not buying/renting a standard black [or be really cool and wear a bright coloured] tux. that being said, i would like some input to some alternative formal wear!

That's cool if your date is cool with it, but generally as a man your job is to be conservative and a backdrop for your lovely date.

Perhaps a vest, a tie, a collared shirt, and pants of your choice (according to the dress code), and casual shoes?

I just described Ryan Seacrest on a weekday. I'm sorry, that's all I've got.

    Seersucker suit
    Bow Tie
    boater flat-top straw hat

edit: if you have time it would also be helpful if you could grow a mustache with twirls on the end of each side.

Dress like a villain from a western.

Well, without the nipple-rider pants anyway...

And this came up in the search, and I couldn't help but chuckle a bit.

But in all seriousness, I like your idea of a brightly colored tux (or aspects of the tux). Have you considered matching the color of your date's dress?

I think wearing a nice button up sans the jacket that matches your date would be nice, maybe a wacky tie.. I'm with synarch, usually men are stuck being the backdrop for their female companions on things like this.

Plus, there aren't many things guys have socially to wear to nice events like this.

That said, my 'date' (we were friends going as a group of singles) was wearing the light blue tux from Dumb and Dumber. It was funny for a few minutes, and we had a man show up dressed as a pirate. Other than that, everyone was pretty standard and formal. Pirate garb can be turned rather formal with the right creativity.
