Default Women calling their friends "bitch" with apparent affection

What is this about? I find it creepy. I know it's supposed to be playful/affectionate, but it just seems wrong (even if it's very over the top "biiaaaaaaatttttch!!!")

Somewhat broader issue possibly, but I have some female friends on Facebook (all of whom I know at least a little in real life!) - a little younger than me (and I'm not that old, I'm 30) - probably 20-27. Their Facebook personas seem to be a lot about posting pics of themselves in slutty outfits and calling each other things like "bitch" and "skanky ho".

Is this a generational thing? Does it have to do with the pornification of mainstream society??

    Comments?

EDIT: by the way, most of my friends are not like this...I would put the ones who are in the "acquaintance" slot...

The people around me call each other "Ugly", "Dickhead" etc. I really don't get it. IRL

otoh, i've heard the "Bitch" comments more in real life.. rare... but it happens.. kind of throws me for a loop too.

Yes. I don't really find anything wrong with using such words though... and I don't know if there is anything deeply wrong with the "pornification". It is just like when they made a big deal of women wearing pants. It is just fashion. I hope someday I am able to walk the streets naked.

Well, this may partly mean that I have too many FB friends (though not a crazy amount, I don't think) and though I may know these people IRL, I should minimize their presence in my life

Facebook is an easy spot for attention-seekers in regards to the skanky outfits and name-calling.
It is a generational thing. . . . . I watched a brief documentary once that outlined how Facebook is a place for people in society to post a whole "new" personality about themselves.

It makes sense I suppose, people use social networking as harmless fun when it cannot be done in the real-world.

I do find the whole pornification thing pretty sinister myself. It seems that young women are being duped into thinking that dressing and acting like sexual availability is a woman's number one commodity, and calling each other derogatory names, is a form of empowerment.

All I can say is...there are some men somewhere who are laughing a whole lot about this and reaping what they perceive as the benefits.

I don't know if they're all being duped into being some way. One I know who comes to mind is a loud, raspy voiced bartender, sells "toys" on the side.. has her own stripper pole. She doesn't just say things like "sexy bitch" - a lot of things about her are kind of aggressively sexual. And while I'm not close friends with her, I'd give her credit for being a pretty "real" person in most things. So maybe she's being real with that too.

OTOH I see the point you're getting at. Like maybe some girls are trying to emulate some image in the media. I'm thinking though that there are others like the above who completely live it. And probably would be that way no matter what was in the media.. like maybe my bartender friend would have been a loud serving wench in medieval times Some things never change.

I wouldn't consider an individual who acts and presents themself in such a way to be a woman. I wouldn't even be willing to put one of those female dogs in the "acquaintance" slot.

Apparently there are a lot of men who get off on this sort of behaviour, though.

I'm not sure if girls who behave/talk like this are doing it more for each other, because they think it's fun or whatever, or if they think it's a good way to get attention from guys.
