    "So"

    1. A word linking happenings in a causal fashion, indicating that the preceding sentence or phrase gave rise to the subsequent circumstances, actions or occurrences. The preceding or subsequent portion of the sentence can be implied or unstated.

i.e., "I didn't want to get hit by a car, so I checked both ways before crossing the street."

"Mexican food doesn't really agree with me, so..." ("...can we go somewhere else?" or "...what would you like to do, given this modified knowledge?")

    2. A word used as a filler in conversations, similar to well or mmm (the mild humming sound humans sometime use when pausing), giving the speaker some time to think before speaking or communicating a lack of knowing what to say or do.

    i.e., "So..."
