It's so true -- you never know what you will find posted on MBTIc.

I feel like I'm watching "People Planet" (a tiny little subdivision of Animal Planet).

it's cool to see that my hug repertoire already includes some of these complicated maneuvers.

Yeah, I find an arm around the shoulders is comforting and leaves them a little space of their own, plus it's easy to turn and hug them if they seem to need it.

I must say, I'm awfully relieved to hear so many NFs saying that they don't need excessive touchy-feeliness. I thought I was going to have to learn a crash-course.

Nah, you're safe, probably- unless your particular friend is very touchy-feely. I don't mind hugs (I almost always accept them gladly, although I don't usually offer them myself) but I prefer for a friend to help me hammer things out verbally rather than get all up in my bidness.

Sorry for the act of thread necromancy, but this thread cracked me up! I guess I must be a weird INTP...I don't mind being hugged, and I don't worry about the logistics. They'll work themselves out. It has never, ever occurred to me to take boobs into account. People hug. You're not coming onto your friend! You're not sticking your tongue in her ear. You're comforting her! I think the awkwardness comes from the overthinking. I don't know, I guess I must've grown up with huggers and had to get over it.

Bottom line is, you read the situation, you figure out if your friend is the type that likes to be hugged. If she is, you hug her, and even if you feel awkward, she won't. She likes being hugged. If she doesn't like being hugged, you can just say comforting words to her or just listen. Then you're both off the hook.

Example: I hugged my neighbor when her husband died. She was in serious grief and the hug was long. I do left arm under her right arm and my right over or around her left shoulder/upper left arm. I, frankly, didn't notice about the boobs... we're the same height. I am sure there were some touching boobs but I sure didn't notice and by her response she felt nothing but comforting. I have much more trouble with men... I notice then.
