Hipster is actually more trendy than emo right now. Might as well go for that wolfy. Indie rock is better than emo anyways.

You still get the skinny jeans.

    Hehe

I just see the style more often in the sort of ironic 80's revival hipsters who shop at American Apparel.

I'm really not quite sure what emo is. :\ I'd probably get tagged as one at times for my hair, but I'm 32, and too old for emo.

alright im sorry if im being condescending in this thread, but this is a subject i take somewhat seriously and it just bugs the hell out of me when someone is ignorant, especially about things i like.

alright, "Emo" in its purest sense is a musical genre which originated in the eighties, it featured rock-instruments with an ambient feeling, dissonant guitars and passive low-key vocals.
it originated along with the rise of hardcore and punk, in the age of rebellion against disco. some people may confuse it with some of its sister-genres of its time, [which may be why people associate 'emo' with hardcore music].
-personally i believe it was named 'emo' because it had more emotional depth than the blaring noise and power chords of its time. if a sheet of music could be measured like human emotions you could see 'emo' songs defiantly had distinguishable ups and downs in melody and tempo and whatnot.

to sum up the answer to your question..
if someone was a complete outsider to musical genres and music classification and styles.. one such person would listen to 'my heart will go on' by Celine Dion and if given a list of musical styles to choose from... [emo being a choice], they would definatly assume it was an 'emo' song.
assuming you feel a certain negative emotion when you hear music and associating it with a whole genre of music is rather ignorant. as if one would listen to a bright eyes song and assume its 'emo' because conor oberst writes sad sounding folk songs.
im not calling your ignorant or bashing you for not knowing what it is haha sorry if i come off that way mate.

Hmm. Well, my sister is emo. Here is what she does:

    1. Pretend you are the only person in the world that feels the way you do.
    2. Wallow.
    3. The two main things that matter in your life: your image (clothes/hair) and the music you listen to.
    4. Take everything seriously (killing two birds with one stone, wolfy!).

pretty dead on. Don't forget complaining outwardly about everything, or at least making seemingly normal conversation out of petty complaints. One I heard recently from a scene-looking kid who was waiting on a ride home from my friend's little brother's house: "This is so dumb, my dad wants me to wait by the front until he gets here or something"

yeah retard, you don't have a car and that's the only way he can SEE you and you can see him in order to pick you up.

Just petty complaints. "where are my favorite pants? mom you put them down to be washed?? god I hate you!" etc etc. ...although when I think emo I think of bratty high school scene kids with little respect for others (the kind that's in every MTV documentary ever).
