No, I don't. The odds are not in my favor, at all.

Apparently a friend of a friend of mine won the $ 1 million lottery this week. This was after he was spending $300 on lottery tickets weekly for years... so yeah... he was bound to win at some point. He's probably made up for all the money he lost at this point.

Wow, that's intense. At least he's helped out the Dept. Of Education quite a bit.

I played once, and won $207. Like all good gamblers I decided to quit while I'm ahead.

In more ways than one... he's helped them out by others learning from his mistakes.

    Pros:
    Possible adrenaline
    Possible opportunity to meet people

    Cons:
Highly probably loss of money, guaranteed over a period of time by the Law of Large Numbers
The suspense of "how much money have I lost this week?" isn't generally pleasant
Why would you want to meet someone irrational enough to buy a lotto ticket?

I conclude that abstaining from the lottery to be the preferred option given the information above.

    Feeble rationalizations I don't buy:
Way to get rid of spare change (Is it really that hard to save change?)
Rite of passage for reaching gambling age (Is that really significant? Just buy porn or something, honestly.)
Play until you win, then quit while you're ahead (To date, I haven't failed a statistics class.)
Can fund government, arguably keeping taxes down for everyone else (thanks for making my burden easier, but I don't feel obligated to pay into such a system)
Less money loss than casino gambling (while it may be the lesser of the evils, not playing is even less evil)

"Gambling is a tax on people that can't do math."
Gambling is a tax on the poor.
    An interesting association.
If a deaf INFP falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

that is how i am too, it is very very hard for me to keep track of. and even harder for me to care to keep track of.

i used to play some scratch-off lottery with my neighbor. i bought tickets for us, and would bring them over to her place. she paid me back for the tickets about half the time, probably. i enjoyed that, playing lottery with her. we perpetually lost.

The only way to win the lottery is not to play. For every time you don't buy a lottery ticket, you win exactly the price of the ticket.

And buying lottery tickets is doing the same thing again and again and hoping for a different result each time - the very definition of madness.

But buying a lottery ticket is like having your star sign read by an astrologer, or having your personality typed by MBTI.

Millions of lottery tickets are sold every day, and millions of astrology charts are printed each day in women's magazines and newspapers, and millions are typed each year by MBTI.

Up to this point you made perfect sense.
