    Fluent in English and Spanish...

Knowing Spanish got me out of the foreign language reqs in college... And funny enough, allowed me to order food for friends last night at a Mexican restaurant. I rarely order in Spanish. I make the Mexys understand my English. They *do* live here now. But I was with some friends who thought it was cool, so I did it for them. /shrug.

    Same here.

I've found this to be true of many Muslim folk of non-Middle Eastern origin. They learn how to read Arabic script so they can read the Quran but don't fully comprehend what they're reading. Thank God for Qurans with the translation in them!

I can read and write about a bit more than 1000 kanji at the moment, and know the simplified Chinese equivalents for about 10% of the ones that are different between the two.
I only knew about 100 kanji 2 months ago, so I can safely say that I should be able to read proper texts in Japanese before 2011.

Often a star was waiting for you to notice it. A wave rolled toward you out of the distant past, or as you walked under an open window, a violin yielded itself to your hearing. All this was mission. But could you accomplish it? (Rilke)
