Default Why is it so hard to not feed the trolls?

On forum after forum, again and again, even with this simple bit of advice in wide circulation, how is it that so many people have trouble figuring out to use this expression. ("Troll" here would be someone who makes argumentative, pointless, or other such remarks just to get attention.)

Perhaps some people actually enjoy hearing pointless, argumentative, and other such remarks? Or just enjoy the person making themselves look silly, and perhaps trying to think of something that will stump them or make them change their minds?

By the way, I believe Economica already started a thread along similar lines before, called "Please Don't Feed the Trolls."

Hustler's thread seems to be a case in point.
(And I've barely even post-whored there... despite his protests!)

Some people just love a good romp.

Trolls are attention seekers yes, and while it may appear that many members on forums don't get this, the truth is that they really do and they actually secretly enjoy the drama that ensues from feeding the troll. They are trying to get the troll banned or removed quicker by feeding it.

It's like a fire in order to get the warm that you want you must feed fuel to the fire and with just the right amount of fuel the fire becomes the perfect temperature. That is what people do to the trolls......

Sigh...some people can't seem to tell the difference between trolling and seeing things from a unique perspective that most people are too stubborn and closed-minded to even attempt to accept. Anyone who has a non-mainstream perspective is a troll.

What you don't understand is that if you read between the damn lines, "troll" posts can be very insightful.

I merely intellectualize my thoughts about sex and relationships, and thus far, I have not found a satisfying intellectualized answer, which leads me to question the intellectual capacity of certain people here.

Justifying it with this "it's part of the human condition" bullshit is just intellectual laziness.

How interesting that here there is a conversation about a troll and you automatically jump to a conclusion that you are in fact a troll by all tense and purpose.

you have no idea who most of us are or where we spend our internet time or what we know at all. Yet you purposely jumped down everyones throat here to defend yourself when not once did I see your name mentioned.

If you read some of Zergling's other posts, it will become clear to you that he has some sort of grudge against me.

    I try so hard dammit!

(Feeding trolls is like feeding squirrels in the park. You know you shouldn't do it because they are a nasty, disease carrying rodents, but they just look so cute with those bushy tails that you can't resist.)

Don't people often start joking around in response to trolls? Something negative, dramatic, sudden, and out-of-place tends to be funny. I think people hop on the crazy-monger jalopy for a good romp.

One way to tell the difference between a troll and someone whose communication is rough is to respond to the most legitimate possible meaning in their post and see how they respond. If this lowers the "troll-like" style then the person may actually be trying to say something. If it has no effect and they continually bait other posters, then prolly just a troll.

Maybe we should bake special snacks to feed the trolls so we don't have to send the poor things away cold and hungry?

That's my way of judging it.

What got me to start this thread was a combination of a couple of things, one was the Hustler threads on INTPcentral, where lots of people write posts, who apparently don't actually like the person, yet never seem to figure out this simple phrase. The other was seeing various "troll relationships", where over and over, the same person will respond to usually the same people acting in a trollish way, acting as if they don't like the person, without apparently figuring out what to do to get the person to stop posting.
