I'm effectively virtually a veggie anyway, despite not choosing to be! Between the price of meat round these parts, my failing finances, my two best friends being veggie and vegan, and my adherence to the traditional Catholic meat-free Wednesdays and Fridays, it's a rare treat to get any flesh round here!

I console myself with dairy products when the vegan's not around

I forgot to mention that obviously, Thanksgiving (like Hallowe'en) isn't really "done" much in the UK. We're usually too busy here preparing for Guy Fawkes' Night around this time of year. I'm going to a big display and hog roast at the racecourse at Market Rasen, about 10 miles from me.

I guess whole ones aren't seen that often in the supermarkets, cos they're mainly a Christmas thing, when you can't move for the bastards. But you can get cuts of turkey very easily and it's about the cheapest meat there is in the supermarkets (apart from stuff like sausage, etc). You can also get whole turkeys pretty easily from local farm shops and stuff, all year round. Tell your UK friends they're not looking properly!
My sister lives in Edinburgh. My parents were there 3 weeks ago and were saying that meat is so much more expensive over there than it is here in the states.... we'll see.

The veggie haggis that I had last year was AWESOME! Elaur could totally scarf that!

Oh yeah I've no doubt it's dearer than over there, but I just meant in the scheme of what you expect it to cost here, it's one of the cheaper meats. If you go kilo for kilo, it'd ruin you to get the same amount of lamb or venison, which were staples in my parents' childhoods. The cost of living generally is much higher here than in the US.

Not sure really, but as I'm going to visit Mom and her family, it'll probably be traditional turkey, cranberries, stuffing, etc. I've lots of pretty traditional family and friends, so that's usually it. And I tend to like most Thanksgiving food anyway (although Mac's gumbo sounds pretty darned good).

No contest! I sort of miss getting pounds of pecans for Christmas - my grandparents' place down by (well, on, really) the Colorado river in Texas was covered in pecan trees - we'd just drag a wagon around and collect loads of them. Now I have to buy them, and those things are expensive!

What exactly is in a vegetarian haggis? It sounds like one of the rare exceptions where the vegetarian version of a traditional meal is more appetizing than the original (tofu turkey - *shudder*).
