We're doing a medieval food week, me and the kids. We're only eating stuff that was available in Europe in the Middle Ages, and cooking it in ways (or close to) that would've been done then.

So, it's pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold, pease porridge in the pot nine days old!

I've just been chopping cabbages, carrots and onions and I've bunged them in a pot with some chicken stock, few herbs and Bob's your uncle. We'll eat it with bread rolls

The irony.. I'm going to be in the U.K. over Thanksgiving weekend visiting my sister and my Scottish in-laws. I think we'll have everything as usual but turkey is hard to come by (very expensive) over there.

We'll probably have some haggis instead.

Who told you turkey was hard to come by??

I guess whole ones aren't seen that often in the supermarkets, cos they're mainly a Christmas thing, when you can't move for the bastards. But you can get cuts of turkey very easily and it's about the cheapest meat there is in the supermarkets (apart from stuff like sausage, etc). You can also get whole turkeys pretty easily from local farm shops and stuff, all year round. Tell your UK friends they're not looking properly!

God, we've had such set-tos with my brother-in-law from Tennessee over pecan pie. Mostly, the pronunciation of it! We say "PEE-kan", whilst he's quite adamant that it should be "pe-KAAAHHHHN"

Already been there, didn't get to celebrate due to lack of anyone around and not having the energy to bother with something big. I wonder if I should make some chicken gravey, mix in mushrooms and drizzle that over mashed potatoes.

I'm convinced it is. I think we're having traditional food, much to my dismay. It'd rock to have something new for a change.
