Jacques Barzun in "From Dawn to Decadence" describes manners as "small morals". I like that description and find it fitting. Essentially, manners are tokens of respect and consideration that keep people tied to one another, just as a society should be.

The purpose of a man is to make things easier on other people.

Manners are no more a restraint than due consideration for others is a restraint.

This is part of what I mean by silly social rituals. I don't think that any gender has any real social rights, I just treat people equally. That seems like the most sane thing to do.

Meaningless to them, which implies a self-centered orientation toward the world.

This presumes that a woman may be reduced to being defined as a host for a vagina. Do you see what a clod this makes you look like?

To all the haters, my avatar rullz and I shall never change it.

On a serious note, the practical purpose is not to let any of the following happen:
I get to the guy's home and his neighbour opens for me. He doesn't even get out of the bed to say hello, because he is watching a movie. Still, he invited me there. Badmouths all along the way, so I leave.

You know, it is true that all these things are a result of the ideology that women are weak and delicate and that the guy is there to take care of you. But I don't care, I like to feel taken care of. Maybe you as guys feel that this is pointless or simply your momma didn't teach you better.

If these things are pointless, than you might as well teach your boys to beat up girls.

He was basically distinguishing the differences between the genders, which are reproductive organs. In this day and age, each gender can pretty much do whatever job equally, and there is less and less of a distinguishment. Including in social rituals.

I might agree that without certain ritual chaos might arise (using a very loose definition of chaos, I mean). But the fact remains I think it's morally dishonest for me to be a "gentleman" if I don't mean it. I'm like a robot performing like I was told to do without wondering why.

And if I personally find no reason to do it, why should I?

I blocked it with the AdBlock extension for Firefox. That is very annoying.

Men and women are only different in the way we differ in our genitals? I disagree obviously.
