    Question Would you sacrifice?

I was talking about this with sanveane a while back.

If you had to choose who would die:

    1. You or a random person?
    2. You or 10 random people?
    2. You or 100 random people?
    3. You or 1000 random people?
    4. You or 1 million random people?
    5. You or 1 billion random people?

    Be honest.

I would probably choose me up until about step 4. Then the probability becomes a little uncomfortable for getting someone I know. If I knew they were outside the monkey sphere it would be more of a weight of being alive vs. dealing with the total collapse caused by the world losing 1 billion people.

It's RANDOM people. Not people you know.

I need to get some sleep... but this is a very interesting topic. I'll put in my full response later... but I think that the world needs less people.

It might be beneficial economically to lose 1 billion people. I don't know if we can assume the opposite, necessarily.

That depends on if he means chosen randomly or random as in "people I don't know."

True enough. Hard to judge until it already happened, though.

Random people could be people you know.

Probably myself for 100. If I was feeling really valiant or empathetic on a given day, then 10.

I'll tell you right now that I see no moral reasoning for sacrificing myself for just one other person though. So long as we are not questioning the quality of the people involved, I see no reason why I should die for the other. As far as society is concerned, the numerical result would be the same.

My morals regarding human life are more pluralistic than altruistic.

What if you had to burn in Hell for Eternity to save the world?

I need a big stack of papers for this one. I need to know exactly what saving the world really means, and what time spent in hell is like.
