I'm going to be letting my family read my novel, so I will not be taking that approach this year. However, character monologues where they rant about everything and anything can also serve the same word count increasing purpose. Have them rant about politics, or what was on TV last night, or what they had for dinner. This isn't entirely inappropriate, either. Think about Reservoir Dogs, the first scene where they're discussing Madonna's lyrics and whether or not they tip. Seems like inane banter but it's really revealing all you need to know about the characters for the first part of the film...

Only had time to start today. It's going to be some sort of post-apocalyptic story. I'm still below 1000 words, all I've done so far is destroying the world

Have fun! You can definitely still catch up from 1,000 words, it's totally do-able. I wrote about 4,200 words just yesterday for example. Whenever you get inspired, jot something down whether you're at the kitchen table, at your desk, watching TV, on the bus (please don't write while driving :p ), or anywhere. You never know where a good idea will come from next.

We're battling the Saskatoon region for world domination. Be sure to get in on regional word battles, they can be fun!

Just open a Word file and type a title, your name, and Chapter 1. That will get you at least a dozen words right there. Then, you will have "started." From "started," it's an easier hop skip & jump to continue...

I'm still at it! Woo, nice work count speculative!

So I was complaining last night that my character is stuck, and kind of boring.. so I decided she is actually going to get stuck in her house. It really fits the character too. Muahahah!

I'm finding that writing in the literary genre for Nano without very in-depth planning beforehand is extremely difficult. I think that the first few chapters are going to turn out to be "He did this, then he did that. Then he had a life-changing epiphany about his past. The end." It's more show than tell. Even if this trend continued throughout, however, it's just the first draft. One promising thing that I have discovered is that I definitely have enough material for a full novel. I'll probably have to cut a few of the themes out in fact, but that can easily be done.

I do plan to fully edit this one starting either immediately after Nano or when I finish the first draft (whichever comes first).

Hang in there & keep writing! It can be done. I wanted to get ahead last night so I wrote for an extra hour while I was half asleep. I ended up writing the first of a series of dream sequences, so that worked out well in the end.

Oh I will catch up. If all else fails, I can always fall back to surreal automatism.
