So I'm studying for the GRE analogies and am compiling language categories--want to help? It's fun. Like the time we played the "animal collectives" language game.

I just came up with one earlier to explain what analogy questions were, incidentally.

    Whole and parts
    finger:hand (a finger is a part of a hand)
    toe:foot
    leg:chair
    window:house

Shouldn't the order of those last two be reversed for consistency? (Or is my understanding of them mistaken?)

    For a proper analogy, yes.

I copied these out of the Barron's study guide. The GRE analogy questions are weird. x : y :: z : q can be used in any relationship so long as the first half is related the same way as the last half, order doesn't matter.

Ahhhh ok. Thanks for clarifying. I didn't know that!

I might add some later if I remember, off to lunch now.

Hmm, I'd put rage and passion with red. It's of blood, anger, romance, heat, danger, rage seems too...

    But that's just me...

Red for most colour seeing animals is just a "pay attention" indicator. If the colour red is there, but comes without a context it's like flashing warning signs with out an indication of what one needs to pay attention to. We humans are lucky enough that we rationalize this away. In an experiment with chimps, they were put into a red room with nothing else in it and they freaked out.
