I like a good melody regardless if there are lyrics or not. The only difference is I prefer instrumental music to feel either reflective or grandiose/epic. I prefer a peppy, energetic song to have lyrics.

It is far more personal than Lyrics. You draw your own meanings from it, not what somebody else says.

wow, so many great replies, thanks guys!

as to the vocal-music, but in different language, I can definitely relate to that one.
in fact, how many of you often found that when you're with your friend, you can just hum the tune/melody to a song that you forgot the lyrics, like "la la laa...na na na naaa" , and then have an ENJOYABLE time together,
as if it's 'okay' if you've forgot the lyrics!
I always find that funny, now that I think about it,
of how 'powerful' the music (alone) is!

    I always hear music first.

Instrumental music is cool because in vocal music, the music is there to support and carry the words sung by the singer. Instrumental music is just there. You can interpret it different ways. If you're trying to work, there are no words to distract you. Instrumental jazz is the best. Pure melody conveying meaning in a more emotional way than lyrics. Cool textures in instrumental music. It's usually very atmospheric and evocative.

Do as you're told, unless told otherwise.

It's funny how melodies are easier to remember than lyrics.

The ability for me to visualize dreamscapes while listening to awesome instrumental music is priceless.

    It's like an NeFi-orgasm!!!

I much prefer instrumental music, or music with lyrics in a language I don't understand, to music with lyrics I do understand.

You get your own meanings from music...lyrics overlay someone else's meaning onto it, and it's often not the same as yours. So I prefer my music untainted with readily available default interpretation.

Of course, with lyrics in English, I usually ignore them. Instances where the lyrics are one of the things I love about a song do exist, but they're rare.

I think that it is the melody and harmony that intrigues and encaptures me.
Because even with regular songs, I always catch the subtle hidden melody.

I like instrumental music, mostly classical music but I really like classic rock guitar pieces, as some heavy metal

Well, I first listened to instrumental music during first year at university - never used to, any way.

... Gives you a kind of kick for the moment, and gets you over certain things.

The only problem with it is; it gets addictive.
