Classical music and those composed with string instruments and/or piano are great, including a lot of dramatic game or movie music. To me, that is music in its purest form, a grand symphony of soundwaves and pure tones. The more smooth yet complicated the piece, the better. It keeps the brain very entertained.

The power and intensity, especially with movie soundtracks.
I remember listening to the music at the end of the movie: Enemy Of The State.
    It knocked my socks off.

It really depends on the genre whether I like instrumental music. I listen to Goa, Techno, Drum N Bass, Dubstep, Cool Jazz and Ambient, a lot, and in those genres anything more then a sample or the occasional MC annoys me. On the other hand of the spectrum are Pop, Classic Rock, Alternative Rock, Blues, Indie, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Punk, Ska and Trip Hop which usually do a lot better with vocals in them. And then there is a group of genre's which can pull of both having vocals, or being instrumental: Electronic Music, Progressive Rock/Metal, Psychedelic Rock and Fusion Jazz.

I'm a "by ear" musician, with a penchant for production and engineering and sounds and stuff... when i listen to music i am absorbing what is going on -- from what the players are doing to where the microphones were in the room...

to be honest I don't process lyrics 90%+ of the time I spend listening to any music...

I listen to a lot of electronica. For me it's mostly about texture, imagery, and atmosphere. I like ambient and psychill a lot, as well as more active stuff like psytrance/goa, idm, dub, and many combinations thereof. Especially with regards to ambient I judge a track based on how it makes me feel, what the textural imagery is like, etc.

An example of this is the seminal ambient album Substrata by the artist Biosphere. It's very low-profile, but paints a hauntingly sonorous and beautiful mental impression of large, open, dark, cold spaces, polar ice caps and frosted northern lighthouses... I could keep going but you get the point. Music that communicates a particular feeling or atmosphere.

Boards of Canada, an idm/downtempo group, is another example. Their music is warm, nostalgic, childlike, and beautiful, but at times eerie and even downright uncanny.

I get distracted by music with English lyrics, so I prefer no words, or a language I don't understand.

No extraneous crap to obscure the emotional content.
