It basically didn't work, since to identify people I had to read names, and when I read names I would remember their avatars... so yeah. Lol.
    Yup.

Half the time I'm on the forums I have avy's switched off, it makes no discernable difference to me, I just tend to pay less attention to who wrote a post.

I'll try it, but if I start to get confused, avatars go back on.

I'll try it and see how it goes. So as of now, none of you have avatars.

Edit next day: I have a whole history associated with each person and his/her posts. I don't think I want to ignore who posts what, and just read endless anonymous posts. That would feel too much like Wikipedia or a news article. And I like Wikipedia, but I can just go there if I want that atmosphere. A forum is really more like a group of people sitting down to talk about stuff.

There actually isn't much point in turning avatars back on or leaving them off. "Knowing" what each person is like still gives each member a personality.

You can't spell "justice" without ISTJ.

That's good in theory but....I'd lose interest without some pretty pictures. >.>

My avatar tells you I play drums.

Don't you want to know me?

I've noticed that I also put a specific tone to people's posts depending on their avatar. This is a really good idea.
The probability that I was procrastinating when I was typing this post:

    P(have big assignment due) = 0.6
    P(posting on TypoC) = 0.2
P(having big assignment due | posting on TypoC) = 0.7

P(posting on TypoC | having big assignment due) = .......

    Eh, I'll finish it later.

I use avatars as a placeholder mostly, so I know who is saying what when I quickly scroll through a thread just skimming it. However, avatars do affect my perception of the poster when they are meant to, such as when someone uses a picture of themselves for their avatar, or it's meant to have special meaning such as a photo of where they live or something related to a hobby of theirs.

Lately, I've had a theme of using avatars of musicians I like, and quoting their lyrics in my sig, although I've only done this a couple of times so far.

So, no avatar turning off for me thanks. I can hardly visit forums where they do not allow avatars and/or signature images. It's like reading a dot-matrix print-out from a TRS-80 or something!
