Go under User CP, then Edit options, and from there under " Thread Display Options " uncheck "display avatars".

Leave your personal one on for the normal forum goers.
Just each person individually, I think.

This is just more of an experiment, I know exactly what avatars do for a message board and for understanding people.

    Also thank you Jock.

I enjoyed not having an avatar - it was only when I finally found a picture of myself that suited me that I added it. I did look at many other sorts of pictures, but nothing 'clicked'.

    +1

    Je ne sais quoi...

I love avatars. They help me get a feel of people, why would I ever want that taken away?!?

    Oh, sorry man. Thanks Jock.
Is it that by its indefiniteness it shadows forth the heartless voids and immensities of the universe, and thus stabs us from behind with the thought of annihilation, when beholding the white depths of the milky way?

The idea's probably accurate, people do in fact perceive others based on appearance to a degree; this's part of why I like the anonymity of the internet, yeu get judged based more on who yeu are and whot yeu say, than how yeu appear.

However, an extension of that *IS* yeur avatar; it's a quick referance guide to 'who yeu are' and allows people to see something that yeu value. My avatar shows how I think of myself, and of a bond of friendship to the one who drew it for me. I consider it very valuable in the sentimental way, and a nice description of myself. However, if I were to remove it, people would know a bit less about me, may not see things from the perspective I'm trying to explain such as.

Type can do the same thing here; some people abuse type, they see someone's type and pass judgement before even hearing whot that person has to say. Others, may see whot that person has to say, and initially be frustrated, then check type and go "oh well I guess they're just thinking about it in THIS way...", which's more how I do so myself usually. It can actually prevent arguments.

In any case, yeur avatar itself is something yeu chose to mark who yeu are in a way that describes whot yeu value. The same with yeur signature. Removing those would make yeur comments a bit more generic, yes, and allow people to focus on just the idea itself... as often the cult of personality can force an idea via followers moreso than actual validity of statement. However, I think it'd not be worth the loss in other ways, and may in fact cause alot of fights long term.

As erm said, your avatar may as well represent something you hate, for example.

I think avatars say a lot about people. Also, I like stuff to look at. I have wished, however, that there was a way to turn off individual avatars.
