I would create an MBTI-mixed army. Everyone in the right place.
I would expand all three fireteams of a typical squad with one extra specialist soldier.
It would look something like this, I believe:

    ENTJ NCO

    Fireteam 1
    ENFJ Team leader (handles communications)
    ISTJ Rifleman
    ESTP Grenadier
    ENTP Automatic rifleman ("machinegunner")
    + INTJ Designated Marksman

    Fireteam 2

    ENFJ Team leader (handles communications)
    ISTP Rifleman
    ENTP Grenadier
INTP Automatic rifleman (most likely to get into a funny debate with his own gun while mowing down entire platoons of enemies)
    + INFJ Rifleman/Medic

    Fireteam 3

    INTJ Team leader (handles communications)
    INFJ Rifleman
    ESTP Grenadier
    ENTP Automatic rifleman
    + ISTP Rifleman/Technician specialist

Alright... Much as I'd like to kick out all those ENTPs because they are painfully up-your-ass about... Everything.
Being the boss of an ENTP is like trying to grab an eel covered with state-of-the-art anal lubrication plus soap and water.
BUT. There's always a but. Sometimes they say or think something valuable, despite their intolerable crap. And they can become quite decent individuals as they grow older. Sometimes. *grudge*

    What's with the ENFJs?
ENFJs and ENTJs work very well together.
ENTJs are more ruthless and big-picture-oriented whereas ENFJs tend to be better with listening to the needs of a small group where there aren't a whole lot of cruel and unpleasant decisions other than to follow orders from up above and shoot back at the guy trying to make swiss cheese out of said ENFJ.

The ESTPs? You're all a bunch of layabouts, drunkards and ne'er-do-gooders who will most likely be shot by your own fellow soldiers for breaking all moral codes, written and unwritten... But, for what it's worth, nobody thinks that quick while in the line of fire and you sure handle that gun of yours like a pro.

    The ISTPs and ISTJs?
You guys are just awesome at what you do, quite generally. Explanation about as redundant as the ENTJ NCO thing.

This was just a peek, as I don't have the energy to write it all down on a bigger level than the squad level... Too many people on company level to handle.
Generals and non-specialist officers should more often than not be ENTJs, in my personal opinion. It is good when the ones in the lead speak the same language.
Advisors can always be other types.

How will I win with this from-the-roots-to-the-top concept?

    - Clear chain of command where officers understand each other
    - Specialists and soldiers of a variety of types most suited for combat
    - Unusual amount of N-types, especially the ENTPs, providing strange but effective solutions to those awful problems that always arise when people starts waving around with boomsticks and throwing bombs.
    - Added specialists to broaden the spectrum of problems that can be solved
    - Specialists also add a more senior face to the group. The guys should preferably be a bit older and have some form of veteran status. If done right, it increases morale.
    - My soldiers would carry state-of-the-art weaponry and equipment. As long as they can perform their given tasks as good as possible, they can pretty much dress like they want and carry nice little gadgets that help them etc...

Oh... And did I forget to tell you that the ENTJ NCO should have contacts at the National Reconaissance Office? Well, he does. Fresh satellite feeds for the win... Nothing better than having a little intel before the fight begins.

INTPs and ENTPs design the giant robots, and get the ISTPs to build them in mass production.

After the ENFP proposition there certainly would be an epic orgy. One worthy of the history books, and the ones for 'Adults' would have about a chapter dedicated to the detail

After everyone got tired out they'd go find some food and continue the orgy. Rinse and repeat, and everyone is happy

ENFPs basically end up saving the world and creating world peace through that single action!!!

I've always wanted to gather up the NF's and lead a war against the NT's (even though in real life we tend to get along very well). It would be epic for sure.

And in the end we know the NF's would win hands down.

    Deal!

Now all we have to do is kidnap Your_Local_Jesus and pay the madam of a brothel in Amsterdam to keep him busy while we burn his perfect warfare plan and administer heavy sedatives to the remnants of his army...

    This won't take long, good!

    ???
I don't see the Flower Children of the NFs beating up the cold, heartless NT's (Especially the NTJs)... Elaborate. Just how do you expect hippies to defeat the people inventing radiation warfare, sound warfare, and laser guns with rainbows and lollipops? And even if ESTPs do get enlisted, how do you expect them to tolerate Infrared Warfare? Or Gamma Rays? No matter how awesome they may be, the natural forces we harness will be incredibly destructive.

I'm being overly mean and stereotypical...

And whiting things out won't do you any good.

You're insane if you think I'd be on the ground doing anything that would put me at risk of being shot through the heart with a lollipop.

    You command your own type.

What type of army do you create and how to do you overcome the other types?
My ENTP "army" wouldn't really fight as much as play the other sides against each other while profitting from the whole fiasco.
