7-8 hours at night and a 2-3 hour afternoon nap would be ideal.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

I feel better the more sleep I get, but I can't usually stay in bed for more than ten hours straight. My ideal would be to sleep about nine hours through the night and a couple more in the afternoon. I can't do that very often, though, because it makes it hard for me to sleep at night.

Usually, I only need 5 hours of sleep - but I can sleep for (up to) 12 hours, at times.

I tend to get about 6 hours a sleep a night, but i can get by with less. After a week or so I like to get a full 8.5 to catch back up, but it isn't needed.

    Yep.

My sleep is weird though. I can function just fine with 6 hours... sometimes I wake up with just having had 6. I remember a few weeks ago I went to bed at 1 am and woke up at 7 am, unable to sleep again. It was very odd.

But I'm groggy no matter what length of sleep I get. If I get 6 hours, all I need to do is force myself to get up (if there's a reason). Yep.

I find I usually naturally wake up after 7/8ish hours, and I suspect that if I made a habit of it, I could get that regularly and be on "full tank." However, getting out of bed seems an insurmountable task on days that I don't have to be up for work, so I usually get one more sleep cycle in (90 minutes) or sometimes two by accident if I spent too much time fakenapping, enjoying the Niing.

The barrier is using my groggy brain to convince myself that I've completed enough sleep.

Presuming I was at "full tank" I can last about 34ish hours and will not feel much of an energy lag, though my red eyes and pale skin would show it, and then I crash in an instant. And by an instant, it's like I can be having a conversation, and then while my interlocutor (GRE word) is speaking I will need to lie down, and will not have the brain power to continue.

I can usually do 3 or 4 hours a night for 3 nights, and then spend a day playing catch-up.

    Sleep cycles.

    This is the answer.

One must wake up when one is in the light phase rather than the deep phase.

    Elaborate please?

I've heard stuff about sleep cycles, but never have actually gotten something concrete or applicable.
