Three thousand years ago they said, "This is Sparta".

But today I say, "This is the Noosphere".

The word, 'the noosphere', is pregnant with meaning from the very beginnings of our civilization in Ancient Greece to the present moment.

And let me say that you can't understand the technology around us until you understand the noosphere.

The noosphere and real life now occur at the same time. In exactly the same way theatre and television occur at the same time in the same place.

You are right, there is a distinction between real life and the noosphere. But rather than being mutually exclusive, one is the content of the other - real life is the content of the noosphere.

Have you not watched the 'reality shows' on TV like Big Brother? They make it explicit, vulgarly explicit, that real life is the content of television and the noosphere.
Real life is boring. Such an old haggard.
Only the noosphere amounts to something.

    Presence is real?
What presence? It is history already.

We both love the noosphere and the noosphere loves us.

I often feel the same way. With MP3 players you trade sound quality for convenience, and the musical experience becomes less intimate, and less of an investment. All of my favorite albums are one that I discovered during the pre-MP3 era, because buying a CD or record was an investment, so I was damn well going to listen to the whole thing over, and over again (which drove my college roommates insane).

Anything that won't bring Star Trek closer to being real is unnecessary.

I have a Grado SR125 headphone for home use. They sound as good as they look bad and they're relatively inexpensive.

For outdoor and noisy environments, I have the Etymotics ER-6i. They act as earplugs to eliminate noise so you don't have to crank the music volume to eardrum blowing levels.

There are better sounding units, but I think these offer the best bang for the buck.
