Ok, I found exactly which monitor would fit in the gap on my desk. It was one of those.

I'm totally changing my mind here. I want the iPhone.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

This one's actually feasible, and I'm guessing it's something we'll have before too many years: Smart food expiration labels. When you open something and put it in the fridge, it begins to display the time remaining.

My eldest asked me for one of those on Saturday.

I'll be damned if he's going to get one before I do.

OMG, that would be excellent. Except, the milk wasn't expired when I started drinking it--but it was sour. Now I know what sour milk tastes like. I've also learned in the past month what bad meat smells like. It's been an amazing month. Usually I just leave it in the fridge until it gets hairy or lumpy--a good visual.
