    One word: pollution!

The air is almost unbreathable, it's worst than Mexico city.

I'd love to live in a village in Provence and just ride my bike around all day, picking up various bits of cheese, bread and bottles of wine, then come home and consume it with friends in the evening. Heaven.
ITA...the same with New York and California...the times I went there I don't
think I bumped into anybody I remember being given a reason to dislike. I d-
on't remember much of it but the first time I went to CA was when I was very
young so I think I've always had a subconscious attraction towards big cities
    because of that.

OK, what about French speaking cities, like Montreal, Canada?

I know two guys from Montreal, they are freaking hilarious.
Does anyone know if it is a fun town and worthy of tourism?

(ok sorry edit, now I saw that you've already replied about grenoble. I have been there once and it didn't feel so bad, but OTOH the Po valley is infamous for its high pollution, so I may just be used to it)

Let's say people from Nice and Toulon are "famous" for their unfriendliness towards strangers, and chauvinistic attitude. And it's the greatest concentration of elderly people in France. So if you want to live in a large hospice filled with grumpy, disgruntled people, this is the place to be.

It's also the only place of France where the FN (far right extremists) can beat the classic political parties during the elections.

Fortunately, rural Provence is not like that at all.
