I could see a page being ripped out of 1984 where loyalty to the government comes at the expense of friends, family, love & sex. It wouldn't even actually be about morals, it would be about control. Personally, that's where I see every single thing leading up to: a global, totalitarian regime. Then again, I've been known to be a pessimist.

I think a page from Huxley's Brave New World would probably be more apt to our current situation: where people are enslaved through pleasure as opposed through fear. The mobs of Ancient Rome were kept quiet through bread and circuses; the modern mob is kept quiet through reality TV and internet porn.

Tyranny through the carrot, as opposed to the stick.

That is what I was thinking too. Not that we will stop eating meat, but that we will not have to kill anything to get the meat anymore.

I wonder if one day, and I admit it would have to be a long time in the future, that the gangs that survive will become political forces. With names like Crips, Bloods MS13 and Hell's Angels getting names that sound like The Federated Union of Freedom Fighting Urbanites. And that when their original names are mentioned, they assume the form of offensive epithets that ostracise people from society.

"How dare you call me a Hell's Angel? We've come a long way from those days. It's this kind of small-mindedness we've come to expect from an intolerant society."
Why do we always come here?

    I guess we'll never know.

I agree with that. Am not sure if the moral swing has to be frightful though.

Frankly, I'd prefer to give up meat than live with infidelity and people around f*cking up their lives with drugs. I've seen this happen too much as it is.
Exactly. I cannot believe that drugs won't be illegal, they cause far too much harm to indiviuals, families and society as a whole for any sane politician to legalize them.

Also I believe that there will be a return to more traditional family units again since especially people who have grown up in patchworks families, in single parent households and as latchkey kids will try to ensure that their kids grow up in a more stable environment. I most certainly will do my best to offer my kid a stable, two-parent-household and I think a lot of Western society's attitudes about open relationships, changing sexual partners etc are just bullshit, they are not helpful in building a healthy family.

Here in the Netherlands, I see that young people are getting more conservative every day! They're way less progressive than the last few decades, so I just think that everything is actually turning back the way it was a long time ago. I'm actualy quite ashamed of it. People who support animal rights are "terrorists" to them, drugs are getting illegal again (pitty, I always wanted to try pot and mushrooms once, but now they're becoming illegal before I turn 18 so I'll never get to try them!), marriage is becoming trendy again, people who get tattoos or piercings or who dye their hair are suddenly "vulgar" to them, rebels are seen as idiots and young people who stand up against their parents or their teachers are "losers" according to their peers, it's just insane! God, I miss the 60s/70s...
I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower. The TV was obviously on. I used to fly myself and I said, "There's one terrible pilot."

I don't know about this, at least in the United States. There are some people moving very far moralistic, but then there have always been those, and there are some moving very far towards, well, the other side.

And there are even more people starting to just plain not to care or hate the others for being too extreme.

    Is extreme centrism possible?

Either that, or the culture will split.

Actually, if you had read the thread on this, you'd see that the relatively sane government of Portugal decriminalized all drugs, and things have improved there. Drug use has remained steady, but drug-related deaths, overdoses, and infections have fallen.

Scholars are already noting that our age is moving in a more Post-Secular direction.
