Well, I'll try to stay in the loop. For a short story I'll go with any theme mentioned and will participate.

How 'bout "what I did last summer."

Extra points if it involves hitting the Gorton's fisherman with a car.

Why limit it in any way but "was it a good story" ?

Should be a sci-fi comedy, like Space Balls and Red Dwarf.

It will be a short story in the genre of your so choosing. The two theme options are: "suffering" or "betrayal". You may pick whichever you like for your short story.

Can we make it between 1,000 and 3,000 words or are these perameters too stringent? Open to suggestions. I don't write short stories... so I don't really know what's reasonable.

The themes sound good. I think 1,000 to 3,000 words is reasonable. It is a competition, after all. If a person feels like they can't meet that criteria without compromising their story, they can always write it however they want to for themselves, and either enter a condensed version or write another one for the competition.

This sounds like fun to me because I've always wanted to write a short story and I've never had enough motivation. I'm trying to do lots of new things this summer - so this is a great opportunity. I can't promise that I will do it, but I want to. I want to challenge myself more than anything, but winning would be kind of fun too!

    Questions:

Do you think the judging system will actually work? Let's say there are 12 short stories written and submitted. How many people are going to spend the time to read ALL of them and then vote on their favorite?

Isn't cheating too possible? A popular author could easily tell lots of people which story is theirs and ruin things. Or they could vote for themselves under different accounts. On the one hand, it's not that big of deal. Things can't always be perfect. But on the other hand, I'd hate to see a cash prize go to a cheater, and for this reason, I'd want a more reliable judging system. (For an easy $100 bucks, I wouldn't put it past a person to cheat a little. They'd be less likely to cheat if there was no prize.)
"When a resolute young fellow steps up the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find that it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

I already have a short that is basicly about suffering. I fear writing another one would probably be similar. xD

    Also, as for judging.

    How about

    1-10 based on storyline
    1-10 based on structure
    1-10 based on spelling/grammar
    = total score

    Something like that.
