My book bag is my arm stabilizer. It's a messenger so it, conveniently, provides a sort of armrest while walking. On the rare occasion I find myself bagless, I wear a sweater with pockets and just stuff my hands in them. I do sometimes find myself at a loss during the summer when the kids aren't with me and classes are out.

Ya, they feel so awkward just swinging around, so I generally put my hands in my pockets.

I've never known what to do with my arms. That's why I walk with them in an asymmetrical manner - like one propped on my hip and the other just loose, or both up and hitched into my back belt loops, or both folded (which I suppose just makes me look cross).

Anyone else think that actually THINKING about what to do with your arms makes you look/feel MORE awkward?

Indeed! It's like being a dolphin counting your breaths before you surface, only dolphins are used to it. And stuff.

Not cross, but certainly brave. What happens when you trip? Won't you go down right on your kisser?

Perhaps you don't trip as much as I do...

I am careful about the pics I put on flickr, but when my friends put up candid pics of me I'm always like.. do I REALLY look that dorky? Do I REALLY stand like that??

Totally, and yet it goes a little something like this:

"Hmm my arms feel kind of out of place"

"Oh shit, thinking about it will only make it worse"

"Oh noes, now I'm thinking about not thinking about that thing I shouldn't be thinking about"

    "my arms are still crooked"

    Really doesn't help.

Glad to see I'm not the only one, it took so long to get the first reply on this thread I actually started to think maybe my arm paranoia was my own freak condition lol.

I have remarkably good balance (considered I'm so myopic), possibly from all those years scooting around on top of giant wooden engine crates. The inside stairs at my house have predated upon me countless times though -- I've managed to fall UP them at times.

If I'm going to take a header, I tend to fall on top of a friend at any rate. *laughs* When I go out, I used to constantly hook onto the belt loops of my INTJ bff, and let him tow me through public places. I wander off.
