Admins, plus Geoff (I think) and me, can change usernames.

Jennifer, random question: is there a limit on the number of name changes a person can do/allowed to do?

Yeah. The formula works like this:

    yourPostCount / 1.8 - 32

Calculate that out, and you'll know how many changes you're allowed.

To find out how many you have remaining:

    yourPostCount / 1.8 - 32 - yourChangeCount

    You're keeping track right?

Basically, use common sense and try to not ask for a name change unless you're sure and planning to stick with it. We are pretty amenable with changes, if the privilege is not abused.

One common reason for a change is because someone has included their real name in their username and would like it removed. Another might be because the current name is too long to type conveniently (or too hard to spell or refer to) and they want to simplify it. Or maybe someone picked a name hastily, then thought of a more suitable one later.

Basically, just keep it at a minimum, it does get confusing when people switch names if others have gotten used to the old one.

(Yes, I know that does not specifically answer the question, I think we prefer not having to "hard-code" a limit unless necessary, and hopefully people can monitor their own requests in a way that no such limit would have to be imposed.)

If people ask for too many name changes, I'll put Nocaps in charge of it.
