I voted 'rarely.' I change my vote to 'sometimes,' or perhaps the next level up, 'frequently.' I'm assuming the poll question is asking, in other words, 'When drinking alcohol, how often is your reason for doing so to get thoughts out of your head?'

If the question is meant along those lines, then my answer is frequently. Frequently, my reason for drinking alcohol is to be blissfully thought-free and buzzed. I like that feeling. The thoughts aren't necessarily even out-of-the-ordinary unpleasant; I just want to be rid of thought in general, rid of everyday, troublesome concerns. But I don't drink too often, to my mind. Maybe three times a week, on average. If drinking weren't so bad for my gut, I'd probably do it more.

If only it worked! Alas, it doesn't. So I don't.

i don't ever drink to get thoughts out of my head. i drink when i am in a good mood, because i enjoy the experience of drinking.
however i once abused alcohol very badly to get emotions out of me, but it didn't work.

I try it sometimes.. (maybe it will work this time...)
Usually just makes me cry and not know why.
It also stinks the next day waking up sick AND having things on your mind, and still having to face the day.

alcohol usually enhances whatever emotions you are currently experiencing. but for some people it enhances repressed emotions or feelings, or draws out worries and anxiety that are in the back of your mind. maybe there is something that is bothering you that you are not actively thinking about, but it is significant to you. sometimes alcohol will bring these things to the forefront.

this is kind of unrelated, but two friends of mine used to drink very heavy when they were in med-school. they would start an IV in themselves (to counteract dehydration), and then go drinking. now these guys are doctors. scary, right? maybe they are your doctors.

same here. if i feel bad, drinking makes me feel worse. if i have insomnia, which i frequently do, i sorta welcome it and type c or write emails, or surf until i'm tired again.

my thoughts are always roiling around. i find that physical exertion is essential to help calm my brain, sometimes working out/hiking AND taking several walks a day. if i didn't do that, i'd probably be a lot more agitated in the evenings.

I grew up around several alcoholics and I hated what I saw. I've never been drunk.

yeah, i totally agree. physical activity is pretty much the only thing that can calm my thoughts and mind. it is essenial for me to get enough phsyical activity during the day.
