What this doesn't take into effect is the kidnappers themselves who are the ones who actually have to look after the child. Why can't they claim dependents?

    Typical government.
Why do we always come here?

    I guess we'll never know.

It's like a kind of torture,

While I was put off by the IRS statement on the matter... I actually thought this too.

It should at least be offered as the quickest way to catch these guys. ("Oh noes, it's a trap!")

O.K. Now I have to admit that when I first briefly scanned the title I did read it as advice to the kidnappers on how to claim the child as a dependent.

How do they find the people wiling to hash out requirements like this? And how often does this come up? "Excuse me, my child has been kidnapped but the only thing I'm really concerned with right now is whether or not I can claim him as a dependent."

I wonder if kidnapped children are covered under kidnapper's health insurance plans?

I'm afraid I have to side with the government on this one. Imagine how many more kidnappings would take place if you could claim someone else's child as a dependent. All you have to do is make sure they get enough of the scraps you throw down in the cellar before the rats get to them first, and change their water dish often enough that they don't get diptheria before half of the tax season is through.
    I don't wanna!

When I first saw this, I thought it was for kidnappers.
