Oh geez! Based on type? No idea, but I can tell you what I like, and I'm an ENFP, if that helps! Well, being typical Ne dominant, I love almost everything except really, really cheesy romantic films. F-ing yuck! Oh yeah, and random movies where I barf upon leaving, but otherwise, here ya go:
° Historical (fiction based on fact): Schindler's List, Downfall, Das Boot, U-571, The White Rose, Sophie Scholl, Braveheart, Gladiator (Well, you get the idea!)
° Psychological thrillers and drama: American Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, A Beautiful Mind, American Beauty, American History X, etc.
° Sci-Fi: Star Trek films, Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back (4 and 6 are also good, but not as good, 3 was also pretty good)
° Fantasy: Lord of the Rings (1 and 3), , Matrix 1 (NOT 2 or 3, yuck!)
° Romantic Comedy: Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones' Diary (1 and 2), Ocean's 11 (cool electronics shit and good looking men woo hoo!)
° Romantic: Pride and Prejudice (1995 BBC series - I think that's also one for INTJs - my husband liked it, and he usually HATES movies - he actually ASKED to watch the end!), Girl with the Pearl Earring!!!!!!!!!!!
° Cheesy Julia Roberts movies: Pretty Woman, etc.
° Disney moviesssss: Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, 101 Dalmations, Cinderella, ROBIN HOOD!!!!!!! (the animal version, of course), Toy Story, Lion King, Snow White (NOT ANY OF THE NEW ONES!!!!! EWWW)
° Fox animated films: Ice Age (1 and 2), Anastasia, etc.
° Cheesy adventure films: Indiana Jones (1-3), Mummy (1-2)
° Spy films: Bourne (1-2), Pink Panther
° Mystery films: Agatha Christie, Poirot (although I think that was a series), Murder She Wrote (DUDE, I loved that series as a kid - and it was one of the few TV shows I watched!) DUDEEEE I totally forgot Sherlock Holmes - though the books were better!, The International (though that was more of a BANKERS SUCK film! hahaa!)
° Action: Conan the Barbarian, Highlander, etc.
° Horror/Thriller: Final Destination 1 (cause it was just weird!! ), The Ring 1, and some random horror movies, though I'm not typically a horror maniac.
° Inspirational: Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets' Society, Mona Lisa's Smile, etc.
Well, you get the idea!

Donnie Darko, is, in fact, awesome. I just got around to seeing it recently. And then, of course, I had to troll the internetz trying to find its true meaning.
NFs and romantic NTs should watch Enchanted April. It's like a vacation in a movie, and it's got gorgeous scenery, wonderful actors, and a great story.
I'm not sure the type, but I also highly recommend In the Bedroom, with Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson. Totally fascinating study in relationship dynamics, and you can feel the tension like you're actually in the house with the main characters. Disclaimer: The title is lobster-trapping lingo; it's not a sexy movie.
