Apparently, Club Nouveau was number one in the US with a remake of Bill Withers' "Lean On Me" . In the UK, Mel & Kim were at number one with "Respectable" .

Agreed. Besides, that viewpoint only takes into account what music sells the best. Lots of 80s music didn't sell particularly well but was beloved and influential. If "commercialization" and the pop hits are what you go by, then the 70s sucked because the Starland Vocal Band and Captain and Tennille tore up the charts.

Exactly. That's why the period around 1982-1987 was great. Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, The Police, U2, Peter Gabriel, Springsteen, etc. were all at or near the peak of the their powers, and they were selling more records than anyone. That's awesome. And there were great harder rock acts like Van Halen, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC. Then the alternative and post-punk bands like The Smiths, The Replacements, R.E.M., The Stone Roses, The Cure, and so on. The Golden Age of Hip-Hop. The '80s were an amazing time for people with wide taste in music.
