Default the public library is for poor people

    discuss.

on a related note, do you find the chance of catching a common cold or similar illness/malady more likely at the public library or in the waiting room of the doctor's office? also discuss.

Depends on where you're from. I've contemplated trying to actually move into the Boston Public Library, yet my milford ct library could double as a quarantine zone.

The public library is for everyone. In the ones around here, you find all kinds of people there. You've got your dirty looking guys with long gray beards, working professionals on their lunch break, nerdy girls in the science section, children with their parents, average joe's looking for a good novel or a DIY book...

As far as germs go, I think college campuses are worse than libraries. Although I've frequented both for years and haven't gotten sick at all this season.

    Correct.

Plus, poor people are usually not too big fans of them.

I'm a library dweller, and you do see different people in them, so practically no. Also the amount of money and space such an amount of books would take (had I bought them) I'd be broke by now. But no, I don't think so. Uni/college libraries around here are public too.
    Maybe in a different place..

Flues and other germs don't worry me, I think I have the same chance to catch them at another public place. I'm more worried when I buy fruits and vegetables, because people tend to sneeze on them, poke 'em and so on.

Doctor's office is a more confined space with practically guaranteed sick people. So.. that one

I've never heard that. It's for literate people.

Haha. It's a public service, at least in Canada. It's open to everyone because it promotes literacy in society. Traditionally, those that struggle with literacy come from disadvantaged backgrounds. That being said, it is for no specific group exclusively. It's designed to meet the communities needs. They have children literacy programs for example.

You get all sort of people here in Canadian public libraries. I know here in BC, literacy and going to the library is heavily promoted. Most cities provide good funding to purchase new books etc.

Catching diseases... I think it's more likely to occur on public transit as compared to libraries. People aren't exactly as jammed pack in there.
