I would want whatever measures are reasonable in terms of cost and difficulty weighed against likelihood of my recovery. I don't want my loved ones in debt or hanging onto an irrational hope of my recovery. For short-term situations, yeah, I would appreciate measures taken to allow me to live, but not extreme measures. I would want the decision to be made inline with what the medical professionals would consider a reasonable effort for the likelihood of recovery (if money wasn't influencing their decisions). It is an important question and kind of has to be discussed before the situation occurs.

If I had things I needed to say to people, I'd be put on life support for just that. So most likely a week or two, or longer if required. Then I'd want to be cut off.

Well, if I got something like ALS, I'd take up base jumping.. or whatever it's called... and sky diving... and I'd be like Dean Karnazas (Karnazes?) and try to climb Everest without oxygen... well, you get the gist.

If it was something like a car accident... well, I've been slightly debilitated before.. and I hated it.. so I'd probably just want to die, unless of course there was a chance for recovery.

No more than three or four months at most, the chance of recovery after that seem rather minimal at best.

I suppose it depends on the situation; for example, is there really any point keeping alive a person, for even a few months let alone over three years, who happened to fall into a comatose state in their late seventies? And, yes that was a clear reference to Ariel Sharon before anyone asks.

I'll based it on quality of life. If I'm in a vegetative state, what are the chances of recovery? If I've been there for a couple of months already, chances of me waking up is small, so why waste hospital resources? The second thing to consider is what sort of recovery am I looking at? Alive but non-functional is useless. Might as well just die. It makes no difference.
