    Default Surprising Successes

    This thread is for naming things that you're surprised ever became popular with the public. Things or attitudes etc. that you're puzzled at why anyone would spend hard earned money on them, or adopt them as a personal style, or spend lot of time keeping up with them etc.

    For me, here are a few:

    ( A. ) Professional wrestling
    ( B. ) Movies showing implausible situations where not much happens except a lot of gullible or stupid people getting slashed and smashed up, and/or chased around.
    ( C. ) High priced costume jewelry
    ( D. ) "Reality TV" shows that seem scripted.
    "The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them that they are being attacked and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
    Reichsfuhrer Herman Goering at the Nuremburg trials.

    Social clubs for people with high IQs. A Mensa social event sounds like a nightmare of pretension and one-upmanship. Never been to one, though, so could be wrong.

    The Snuggie.

    I'm surprised the whole hip-hop inspired baggy pants falling off of one's butt/giant shirts/Timberlands look is still around. I'd have thought it would have been replaced by something else by now.

    Current country music. I'm still baffled that people actually choose to listen to it.

    Dunkin' Doughnuts.... there's no way that company should make that much money and be as successful as it is. I bet the DEA pays them to put all the excess cocain they have laying around into their coffee in exchange for tax breaks.

    Its easier to play, I got pretty good at it (guitar hero, I suck on guitar) until I moved onto other things.

    I'll go with vegan specialty stores, where you pay more for parasite-infested food.
    ...Then I ducked my head and the lights went out, and two guns blazed in the dark;
    And a woman screamed, and the lights went up, and two men lay stiff and stark...
